2022 Hyundai H1 / Starex Van: Everything We Know About South Korea’s Bold New Transit Rival

The typical commercial van isn’t exactly the most desirable thing on the street, yet they’re a vital asset for those needing to haul in safe and secure comfort.

Hyundai’s entrant in this segment is known as the H1 as well as Starex Grand Starex, i800, iLoad and iMax among many other names depending on the market and whether it’s the commercial or people mover variant. It’s not as popular as some well-known nameplates; however, a radical new redesign aims to change this.

Recently-spied prototypes cloaked in minimal camouflage indicate an imminent reveal, so let’s get in first and take a sneak peek before the covers are officially lifted.

A Bold Outlook

At first glance, there’s certainly no escaping the boldness of this redesign. Attention-grabbing frontal styling consists of a large rectangular grille and split-headlamps that feature thin horizontal LED DRL’s under the hood’s leading edge.

Going against the usual trend of having a small glasshouse-to-body ratio, the H1 flips the script by adopting a fish tank appearance with unusually tall side and rear windows. Minimalist sheet metal surfacing is refreshingly devoid of fussy styling flourishes, and the rear has a squared-off look with vertical LED taillights and a large spoiler.

A Nicer Place To Travel

Like the exterior, the cabin also takes a radical new direction; here, the dashboard cascades downwards around the center stack, exuding a more car-like appearance. The steering wheel is shared with other models in the Hyundai lineup, and the freestanding gauge cluster is similar to the one found in Ford’s Mustang Mach-E.

The H1 will again offer dedicated cargo and passenger carrying options, with the latter capable of seating up to 11 people. A significant increase in safety technology will likely feature autonomous emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, rear cross-traffic alert, safe exit assist, blind-spot monitoring and rear-collision braking.

Under The Skin

Depending on the market, the H1 will be powered by a mix of petrol and diesel engines. The oil burner is a 2.2-litre turbo-four pumping out 198 hp (148kW) and 325 ft-lb (440 Nm) via a new eight-speed automatic transmission. In regions where diesel is unpopular, Hyundai Motor Group’s new 2.5-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder could do the trick; it produces 286 hp (213 kW) and 311 ft-lb (422 Nm). There’s also been talk about a hybrid as well as a full-electric variant to go with the times, but that’s something we’ve yet to confirm.

Rivals & Reveal

We anticipate an official reveal in the coming months, as an MY2022 entrant.

Hyundai’s Redesigned 2022 H1 (Starex / iMax) Spotted, Could Debut Next Year

We spied another prototype for the revamped Hyundai H1 minivan with slightly different camouflage than before, this time shot by our photographers in the Alps. We still believe that it will be presented sometime next year in most markets, possibly as a 2022MY. [Updated 9/24/2020]

Hyundai isn’t known for their vans – at least not in North America and other major Western market, but spy photographers have caught pictures of the upcoming H-1 / Starex / iMax.

Set to get its first redesign in more than a decade, the van is heavily disguised but features an all-new front fascia with a wide grille that appears to span nearly the full width of the vehicle.

Additional details are hard to make out, but we can see headlights that are mounted low on the bumper. This suggests the model will adopt split lighting units similar to those found on crossovers such as the Santa Fe, Palisade and Venue.

Moving further back, we can see pronounced wheel arches and triangular front quarter glass. The model also has larger windows which should help to improve visibility. The van also retains its boxy shape as practicality and space are the name of the game.

The interior picture isn’t the best, but we can see the van will have a free-standing infotainment system and a passenger side dashboard with metallic accents that flow into the air vent. The latter feature can also be found on the 2022 Tucson, which debuted earlier this week.

Little else is known about the van at this point, but we can expect an assortment of petrol and diesel engines. We also wouldn’t be surprised if the current five-speed automatic transmission is replaced by something a bit more modern.

The redesigned H-1 / Starex / iMax is expected to be introduced next year and should be offered in a variety of international markets.

Hyundai H1 / Starex A1 / H200 1

The Starex succeeded Hyundai Grace in most countries. Like the Hyundai Grace, the first generation Starex was based on Mitsubishi Delica and was offered available in a wide range of configurations, including minivan (MPV) and minibus , van , pick-up , taxi , and ambulance . It had used a 2.5 SOHC 8-valve turbodiesel engine that has an output of 85 horsepower (63 kW) at 4000 rpm and 170 nm of torque. It offered ABS, LSD and an optional 4-speed automatic transmission, back up sensors and a driver’s airbag. It has 10- or 12- seat configuration. Starex/H-1 2000 version offered much more with a new front fascia, a new 2.5 DOHC 16-valve commonrail direct injection turbo diesel engine that had an output of 123 horsepower (92 kW) and 360 nm of torque. The 3rd generation sports an all new body and two engine types: a base 2.5SOHC 8-valve turbo diesel engine with 110 horsepower (82 kW) and 232 nm of torque and another 2.5DOHC 16-valve commonrail direct injection with variable geometry turbo with a class leading 174 horsepower (130 kW) and 402 nm of torque. Top of the line model features a leather interior an overhead console and immobilizer. Aluminum accents, split, folding seats, all power features, climate control, keyless entry and DVD player with 6 speakers are standard.
