Continuous improvement

Airbus relentlessly invests in the A330 further development to deliver continuous innovation for this fly-by-wire aircraft product line, resulting in lower costs and even better operability for the A330-300.

Available enhancements include weight reductions in the airframe, introduction of modern passenger cabin features, and system improvements to engine upgrades, along with advanced navigation systems in the cockpit. The improvements also result in longer intervals between maintenance checks.

A recent enhancement is the aircraft’s increased maximum takeoff weight capability to 242 metric tonnes. With this improvement, the A330-300 has gained as much as 500 nautical miles of extra range, extending its reach to 6,350nm (11,750km.) with 277 passengers, with the capability to carry nearly five tonnes more payload than the previous aircraft at a maximum takeoff weight of 235 tonnes.

In operational terms, an A330-300 with the increased takeoff weight can connect such city pairs as London to Tokyo, Frankfurt to Cape Town, Beijing to Melbourne, Kuala Lumpur to Paris, and Los Angeles to Dublin.

The A330-300 is a large capacity, medium- to long-range aircraft, and the largest of the twinjet family. It’s related to other A330 and A340 aircraft, but only has two powerful engines.

The origins of this powerful plane date back to the middle 1970s as one of the main derivatives of the A300. Developed at the same time as the A340, the A330-300 shares many components, making maintenance, flying, and repair incredibly easy.

Development

About 150 million euros are invested in the A330 program each year to ensure that these jetliners are always improving. Improved features, such as weight reductions, better cabin features, and systems improvements set the A330-300 apart.

First entering service in 1994, the A330-300 has undergone many variants since then, each with their own set of strengths. As early as 2010 a new variant was offered. The increased weight and range made the new version of the -300 a powerful option.

Orders and Deliveries

As recently as 2008, Gulf Air ordered 20 of these powerful aircraft. Eight were ordered by Saudi Arabian Airlines in the same year, with the first one delivered in 2010. By February 2019, there had been 789 of the A330-300 ordered, with 766 of them already delivered. The list price in 2015 was $246.2 million.

There were 49 deliveries in 2017, 32 in 2018, and only 3 in 2019.

Design

This aircraft was designed to be a stretched version of the A300 and features a fly-by-wire system, stabilizers, and new wings, as well as a stretched fuselage. With a larger gross weight and improved range extension, this aircraft is incredibly roomy and offers great mileage.

The standard A330-300 has the same length as the A340-300, but there are stretched and shortened versions of this aircraft.

Other variants include the A330-300HGW, which has a higher gross weight with a higher takeoff weight. The A330 Regional seats around 400 passengers and has a reduced range. This variant was first delivered to Saudia in August of 2016.

Flight Deck

This is a powerful variant of the A330, even though it is a little bit shorter. It features a classic 3-class configuration and can easily hold up to 253 passengers. The fuselage frames are much shorter than on the original A330-300, and reach only 58.82 m. As part of the A330, the A330-200 is the most spacious of any other similar aircraft in this category. This means that the cabin can easily be set up in a number of different ways, with optional galleys, stowage areas, lavatories, and groupings for airliners to choose from.

Development

The A330-200 was first introduced into service in 1998. Korean Air was the first airliner to use this powerful aircraft. By adjusting the fuselage length, the vertical stabilizer, and the wing, Airbus was able to create a larger and more powerful aircraft.

With 660 of these aircraft ordered and 637 of them already delivered, these planes are in use around the world.

Orders and Deliveries

By October of 2011, there were 568 orders for the A330-200 and 437 of the aircraft had already been delivered. Oman ordered seven aircraft, with the first one being delivered in the fall of 2009.

Design

There were a number of design changes made to this aircraft to ensure that it was not only powerful, but also comfortable. The aircraft had a new vertical stabilizer that was first introduced in 2004. The shorter design of the fin was derived from other Airbus planes.

In 2008, plans were released for a version of the A330-200 that was designed to be more efficient and better able to compete with other similar aircraft. This was the A330-200HGW and had an impressive 5t increase in take-off weight.

2012 saw another version announced. This increased the maximum gross weight to 240t. Other versions of this aircraft include the ACJ330, which is a long-range corporate business jet. The A330-200F is an all-cargo option, while the A300P2F was adapted for fast delivery and commerce options.

Finally, the A330-800neo has a longer cabin with six more seats, while the A330-900neo has 10 more seats and takes much less fuel during flight.

There are also a few military variants, as well as some variants that were designed, but never developed.

Flight Deck
